Let’s Talk with Matthew Van Meter
On May 13, meeting member Matthew van Meter joined Moorestown Friends Meeting’s Anti-Racism Committee to discuss Deep Delta Justice. His book describes the key figures involved in the 1968 Supreme Court case Duncan v. Louisiana, which guaranteed the right to trial by jury. Matthew shared his perspective on the impact of his Quaker upbringing on his work, and his care, as a white man, to ensure that he depicted the events revolving around the story’s Black protagonist accurately and appropriately. He also noted echoes within our present-day justice system and talked about current projects including the Shakespeare in Prison project and the Nancy Buirski documentary, A Crime on the Bayou, based on his book.
