A book discussion with co-authors Charles Middleberg and David Austin
Charles Middleberg of Cherry Hill is a Holocaust survivor, who prefers to be called a witness. Charles and his family are Polish Jews, living in France. After the German invasion in May 1940, Charles's father and mother are taken away. For the next five years, Charles and his brother will have their lives saved - again and again - by a series of small miracles. Some happen by chance, but most occur because of people who simply decide to do what is right, at exactly the right moment, at great risk to themselves, at a time when doing nothing would have been the safe thing to do. This is the message Charles brings as he tells his story of perseverance and survival, and about the dangers of hate, especially during today's troubled times when hate is again on the rise. He is a witness to the worst crime against humanity in history; when Charles retells his story, we, too, become witnesses.
Dave Austin, a member of Haddonfield Meeting, recently retired as a middle school history teacher in Marlton. After hosting Charles in his class several times, David asked Charles if he would consider turning his story into a book for middle school students. Charles consented, and the result is Small Miracle.
This discussion is sponsored by Haddonfield Monthly Meeting. Copies of the book are available from local booksellers such as Inkwood Books in Haddonfield.
