Quaker Activism at a Local Level: Mutual Aid, Town Politics, and News

Quaker Activism at a Local Level: Mutual Aid, Town Politics, and News JanuaryJan 16 2022 19:00 - 21:00 America/New_YorkZoom, PA

Ali Mctar will discuss Quaker Activism: Quakers pride themselves on having been on the right side of history. And we should. The Quakers were indeed at the forefront of nearly every significant social movement in the United States. However, I'd like to present and explore what it might mean for Friendstoday to be on the right side of history? How will futuregenerations regard the contemporary Quakers in our moment of turmoil and deepening societal division? What does it mean to speak and live light today? I do not have the answers. But I hope to show how complicated the problems are and offer some openings from my experiences as an academic who studies early Quakerism and as a mutual aid and prison-abolition organizer. In the end, I hope we can discuss how New Jersey Friends, and the larger Society of Friends, might contribute to our political and social moment in ways that reflect our spirit-led lives.
