Climate scientist David Goodrich comes to Kennett Square on March 12, 2pm to debut his new book - On Freedom Road: Bicycle Explorations and Reckonings on the Underground Railroad. He is speaking at London Grove Monthly Meeting and will be signing copies of his book.
Goodrich biked 3000 miles over four years as he traveled the routes from New Orleans to Ontario that enslaved people took in their daring attempts to reach freedom. He visited many Underground Railroad sites along the way, including those Harriet Tubman used in the Kennett Square area. He now returns to London Grove Quaker Meeting, a site he visited on his bike trip.
Publisher's Weekly writes of the book: "Climate scientist Goodrich documents his bike rides along 'routes of the Underground Railroad' in this illuminating blend of history and travelogue.
Throughout, Goodrich reveals how slavery is remembered and misremembered in America, and makes a convincing case that 'national trauma, like a wound, tends to heal when it's exposed to air.' It's a harrowing yet inspirational ride."
David Goodrich worked at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and served as the Director of the UN Global Climate Observing System in Geneva, Switzerland. He retired as head of NOAA's Climate Observations and Monitoring Program. In addition to his cross-country bicycle trip, he has ridden down the Appalachians and across Montana, South Dakota, France and Spain. He lives in Maryland. His previous books include A Hole in the Wind, which covered his journey bicycling and monitoring climate change from Delaware to Oregon.
Refreshments will be served following the discussion.
