The Peace Corps: Early Days by Greg Barnes
Please join us via Zoom: http://bit.ly/408nIwF
Greg Barnes was among the first Peace Corps Volunteers with Sierra Leone One, in 1961. He then served as a staff member in Nigeria and Washington, altogether, 5 years, 1961-1966.
His memoir is frank in its admission of his own and his country's early naivety about working in the Africa of the 1960's. His varied and intense service moved from a Puerto Rican training program to a remote village in Sierra Leone toNigeria, then to the power corridors of Peace Corps headquarters where R. Sargent Shriver carried out John F. Kennedy's directions.
His book includes odd, humorous, and occasionally daunting tales (as in a showdown with a spitting cobra).
Greg says his experience with the Peace Corps is the best teacher he ever had. Unknowingly, that time, it led to his Quaker faith.
